Herbs for premenstrual syndrome

When it pulls and hurts

Every few weeks, women suffer more or less from the side effects of menstruation. Sometimes the symptoms are so severe that only medication can help and the intensity of the bleeding is so heavy that everyday life is unpleasant. All these unpleasant side effects are summarized under the term premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
Nature also has a lot to offer that can alleviate the symptoms.

Mood swings
One possible trigger is an imbalance of hormones with excess oestrogen. Herbs that have a balancing effect and dampen the excess oestrogen somewhat:

  • Monk's pepper
  • evening primrose
  • St. John's wort - note that this herb can reduce the effect of hormonal contraceptives.

Herbs that stimulate bleeding

  • Sage - as a tea
  • Rosemary - as a foot bath
  • Nettle - also stimulates blood formation

Herbs that reduce bleeding

  • Yarrow
  • Horsetail
  • Lady's mantle
  • Mistletoe
  • Shepherd's purse

Herbs that relieve cramps
Back pain, abdominal pain, diarrhea or constipation are typical accompaniments to menstruation. Antispasmodic plants can help here:

  • Camomile
  • cinquefoil
  • sage
  • Ginger compress. Grate some ginger and make a strong tea from it. Soak a cloth in it and wring it out. Place it on the cramping area and cover it with a towel. Add a hot water bottle if you like.

Tea for PMS
Mix 30g vervain, 30g St. John's wort, 30g lady's mantle, 30g monk's pepper, 20g nettle, 20g lavender and 20g camomile flowers. Use 2 teaspoons per cup. Pour boiling water over the tea and leave to infuse for 10 minutes.
Caution: St. John's wort can reduce the effect of the contraceptive pill.

Against tension in the breasts
Mix 150 g Vaseline, 75 g violet, 75 ml olive oil and 1.5 tbsp rose water to make a cream. Apply the cream to your breasts several times a day.

If the discomfort is too severe, ask your gynecologist for advice.
