Just like our muscles, our brain is trained by absorbing and processing stimuli. Certain movement sequences can strengthen connections between nerve cells and create new synapses. Crossing exercises, for example, stimulate blood flow to the brain and finger exercises promote concentration. This is particularly helpful for children who have difficulty concentrating at a stretch.
Bear in mind that the brain gets tired quickly when concentration is high. So don't practise for too long at a time, but rather more often.
Walking for the brain
Stand up straight. Stretch your right arm straight up. Bend your hand backwards so that the palm is facing upwards. Spread your fingers apart. Stretch your left arm downwards and clench your left hand into a fist. Now lift your left knee with the tips of your toes pointing towards the floor. Put your leg down again. Now raise your right knee and stretch your toes towards the ceiling. Continue walking alternately for one minute.
Building air forms
Stand upright. Raise your arms to shoulder height and bend them. Stretch out your index fingers. Draw a triangle in the air with your right hand and a circle with your left. Keep practicing until the movements are fluid. Now stretch your right arm straight down along your body. Draw another circle in the air with your left index finger. Draw a triangle on the floor with the tips of your right feet. Continue until you can perform the exercise smoothly.
Swing
Stand with your feet hip-width apart. Place your left hand on your chest and your right hand on your stomach. Breathe deeply into the hand on your chest for one minute, then into the hand on your stomach for one minute. As you breathe out, lift your legs alternately.
Change arms
Sit upright at a table. Place your arms on the table. Cross your left arm over your right arm. At the same time, cross your right leg over your left leg. Now cross your left arm over your right arm and cross your left arm over your right leg. Repeat this exercise 10 times.
Do these exercises and observe how your memory improves.
