Keeping your car fit for winter

Falling temperatures, constant wetness and fog - winter brings with it a number of dangers on the road. How to keep your car ready for the cold season.

Winter begins for the car as early as October. The double O rule states that it makes sense to fit winter tires to the car in October and change them again at Easter. In addition to the month, it is also important to observe the 4x4x4 rule. This states that four identical and not older than four-year-old tires with a minimum tread depth of four millimeters should be fitted.

In addition to these rules, the car should be checked more frequently in the winter months than in the summer. Replace the battery early enough and make sure that the navigation system, radio, lights and seat heating are switched off when starting the car. This will make the battery last longer.

For good visibility, check early on whether the lighting system is correctly adjusted, the antifreeze is topped up and the windshield washer system is working smoothly. Of course, all this is of little use if the view is covered with a layer of ice. In this case, it helps to have a sturdy ice scraper and, if necessary, gloves ready. Driving with limited visibility is dangerous and exhausting, but you also risk a fine and, in the worst case, even having to surrender your driver's license. Remember that danger also lurks on the side of the car in winter. So clear all the windows of ice.

If you do break down in winter, it's a good idea to have a high-visibility vest, a thick jacket, good shoes and a charged cell phone to hand. In the worst-case scenario, you won't have to freeze while you wait for help. Nevertheless, it is worth taking off your thick winter jacket while driving. Otherwise, the effectiveness of the seat belts will be reduced, as the belts will be less snug against your body.

Please be careful and continue to drive safely from A to B.
