The male body in midlife

The body in transition - Part 2


In the male body and its hormonal balance, midlife is less drastic than the same time in the female sex. Nevertheless, there are also various changes that occur in men. We would like to list the most important ones here.

Hormonal changes:
During midlife, the production of the male sex hormone testosterone gradually decreases. This process is known as andropause or male menopause. Testosterone levels usually change more slowly than the hormones in menopausal women, but symptoms such as reduced sex drive, fatigue, sleep disorders and mood swings can still occur. Men who are overweight, have high blood pressure or diabetes are at greater risk of experiencing a decline in testosterone.

Change in bone density:
With increasing age, bone density in men also decreases, which leads to an increased risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures.

Change in body composition:
Men tend to lose muscle mass and gain body fat during andropause. A fat pad tends to accumulate on the stomach in particular. This often leads to a loss of muscle strength and a slower metabolism.

Changes in cardiovascular health:
In middle age, the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis and heart attacks increases. It is therefore important to maintain a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise, a balanced diet and refraining from risky behaviors such as smoking.

Prostate changes:
The risk of prostate enlargement and prostate cancer increases with age. Regular check-ups and a healthy lifestyle will also help you in this regard.
