Proper foot care

Summer is coming to an end and many people are switching from sandals or light sneakers to closed leather shoes. Read here why foot care is particularly important at this time of year.

Pedicures are not just about beautifully painted toenails and shaved calluses: If we cut our nails incorrectly and wear tight shoes, they can quickly become ingrown. To avoid painful inflammation, you should care for your feet regularly.

Cut your nails
Ingrown nails are a common cause of discomfort in the area of the feet. These often occur when nails are cut too short or too round. Therefore, try to keep them as straight as possible. It is best to give your feet a bath beforehand, for example with a little peppermint oil and a slice of lemon. Apply cream afterwards.

Don't scrape off too much
When it comes to calluses, it's important to find a happy medium. Do not remove them too generously, as they protect our feet. However, thick areas should be filed down a little, otherwise the skin will crack. It is best to remove calluses over several days so that the feet can get used to them. Use a suitable callus file or a pumice stone to do this.

Sneakers today, boots tomorrow
Try to vary your choice of shoes, even if you only vary between two models. This means that your feet have to constantly adjust and different muscles are trained. You can also prevent one-sided strain on the joints. Make sure your shoes are comfortable: if they are too tight, they put pressure on the toenails and can encourage incorrect growth. A good shoe supports the foot in the middle, but leaves enough space in front.

If you often have problems with ingrown nails or calluses that are too thick, you are advised to visit a podiatrist from time to time. In contrast to pedicures, podiatry deals not only with aesthetic but mainly with medical foot care.
