They’re everywhere: cell phones, tablets, laptops, TVs, and much more. Colorful and fun images flicker across the screens, drawing our attention. Not just adults, but especially young children. These devices are so widespread that every household has at least one of them.
Young children notice how their parents, siblings, or playmates use them and, naturally, want to try them out too.
To learn all the exciting things there are for a toddler to learn , excessive use of such media isn’t advisable.
For their development ,children need emotional security and for their caregivers to engage with them with interest. They want to discover and explore what the world has to offer, and they want to hear and say those funny words.
Language and motor skills develop through practice . That’s why active time spent together with parents is especially important.
Learning Through Play with All the Senses
There are countless interesting opportunities to learn in nature and around the house .
- Filling a plastic bottle with stones
- Stacking stones or twigs on top of each other
- Digging in sand or soil
- Smell different flowers
- Touching pinecones, tree bark, or leaves
- Collect rocks and throw them into the stream
- Parroting words that parents say
- Marveling at earthworms
- Stomping in piles of leaves or puddles

How You Can Help
Children notice when their caregiver would rather be on a cell phone than take time for their interests. Of course, it’s perfectly fine to send a text message, make a phone call, or read an interesting article. The key here is to strike a good balance in how you divide your attention :
- Don’t answer every call. Long conversations with a friend can also be saved for the evening, once your child is asleep.
- Take media breaks when you’re out and about with your child.
- Don’t keep your child occupied exclusively with screen-based media.
- Set a clear time limit for screen time.
