What is toxic masculinity?

Everyone is talking about toxic masculinity, but what does this term actually mean?

Toxic masculinity refers to cultural norms and behaviors that expect men to behave in a certain way in order to be considered "masculine". These norms can be harmful, both to the men themselves and to others.

Examples of toxic masculinity include:

  1. Suppressing emotions: Men are not supposed to show weakness and hold back their emotions.
  2. Aggressiveness and dominance: Men should appear strong, aggressive and dominant.
  3. Devaluing femininity: Everything that is considered "feminine" is devalued or regarded as inferior.
  4. Sexual aggressiveness: Men are supposed to be sexually aggressive and have changing partners.

These behaviors can have a negative impact on the environment of the men in question. Mental health problems, relationship problems and violence are not uncommon consequences of toxic male behavior. It is therefore important to question these norms and promote a healthy, diverse idea of masculinity. Men can actively work to recognize and avoid toxic behaviors by:

  1. Learning to recognize, express and process emotions.
  2. Communicating honestly and respectfully in relationships.
  3. Developing understanding for the feelings and perspectives of others
  4. Recognizing and respecting different forms of masculinity.
  5. Look critically at traditional gender roles and move away from them.

By taking these steps, men can help create a healthier and more inclusive environment for themselves and others. Women can support men by challenging toxic masculine behavior and acknowledging and respecting different forms of masculinity.

Have fun observing and critically reflecting!
