When working at the computer hurts

Frequently repeating the same movements with the computer mouse can lead to sore wrists. Find out what triggers the pain and what you can do about it here.

If the arms and hands are overloaded by working on the computer over a long period of time, this can lead to "mouse arm". Contrary to what the name of this complaint might suggest, however, it is not only the computer mouse that causes the pain, but usually also the keyboard and an incorrect sitting posture.

Symptoms
The pain often starts gradually. A pulling or tingling sensation in the fingers is noticed and the hand and forearm feel weaker than usual. At first, it only hurts when you make the corresponding movement, such as clicking the mouse or typing on the keyboard. Later, it may also hurt at rest. Over time, the pain becomes more severe, and swelling and restricted movement may also occur. Under no circumstances should the pain be ignored, as otherwise tendonitis may develop.

Treatment
The first step is to change the working conditions. The workplace should be ergonomically adapted so that the arms are not overloaded. If the wrists are already painful, massages and gymnastic exercises can also provide some relief. However, prevention is the best cure for mouse arm.

Tips for prevention
Buy a suitable computer mouse that is rounded where the palm of the hand rests

  • Hold the computer mouse loosely in your hand
  • When using it, place your forearm on the table so that your wrist does not bend
  • Switch between mouse and keyboard more frequently (keyboard shortcuts help here)
  • Keep your wrists warm
  • Take conscious breaks and do some stretching exercises for your hands and wrists
  • Rest the weight of your arms on the table while typing on the keyboard
  • Use an office chair that can be adjusted to your height
