Alcoholic drinks provide kilocalories. However, this is not the only reason why alcohol makes it difficult to lose weight. Alcohol does not have to be digested first, but can be absorbed directly in the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract, i.e. in the stomach and small intestine. This allows it to enter the bloodstream quickly. From there, it first flows into the liver , where it is broken down.
As the breakdown of alcohol has priority for the liver, no fat is burned during this time. Not even if you are calorically in the red and your body could actually burn fat. On the contrary: certain alcohol breakdown products, such as acetyl-coenzyme A, can be used to produce new fatty acids. Three fatty acids at a time are linked together and can thus be stored as fat . If you drink a lot of alcohol, the large amount of fat produced and stored in the liver can lead to a fatty liver . If the liver is fatty, it can no longer work properly and, in the worst case, parts of the liver may even die.
As you can see, alcohol has a negative impact on your weight loss.
If you are trying to lose weight , prefer non-alcoholic drinks that have as few kilocalories as possible. These can be light drinks , but you can also make delicious cocktails from fruit juices and mineral water . Here are two examples:
- 1 dl grape juice, 0.5 dl orange juice, 1 dl mineral water, crushed ice
- 1 dl orange juice, 1 dl mineral water, 1 tsp grenadine syrup, ice cubes and a little lemon
If you do want to drink a glass of alcohol during the weight loss phase , make sure that you drink it with something low in fat rather than with a high-fat meal. This is because the latter further intensifies the effect mentioned above and the fat is stored directly. Snacks served with an aperitif are also often high in fat. A handful of nuts (50 g), for example, contains 25 g of fat and around 300 kcal.
Instead of snacks, combine alcohol with physical exercise, such as dancing or going for a walk.
