A hanging garden made from tin cans - sustainable gardening on the balcony

Transform the tins into charming planters and create a hanging garden on your balcony.

Do you have empty tins at home that you would like to dispose of? Then why not wait and use them to create a beautiful hanging garden on your balcony. Not only will you be bringing a piece of nature into your home, but you will also be setting an example for recycling and sustainability - in the spirit of "turn old into new".

Materials:
Several empty tin cans (well rinsed and without sharp edges)
A hammer and a nail or a drill
Wire or string (weatherproof)
Soil and small plants or herbs
Colors or decorative ribbons to decorate (optional)
A stable place to hang (e.g. a grid, wall bracket or railing)

Procedure:

  • Remove the labels and clean the tins thoroughly. If there are any sharp edges, carefully file them down so that no one injures themselves.
  • Use a nail or a small drill to make one or two drainage holes at the bottom of the can so that excess water can drain away. You will also need two holes opposite each other at the top of the can to hang it up.
  • Now you can let your creativity run wild: Paint the tins with weatherproof paint or decorate them with scraps of fabric or decorative ribbon - this will give each tin its own character.
  • Fill the tins with some expanded clay or small pebbles (for drainage) and then with soil. Herbs such as basil, chives or thyme as well as smaller balcony flowers or succulents are particularly suitable.
  • Thread wire or string through the top holes and attach the tins to a suitable place - for example, to an old pallet board that you place upright or to a sturdy railing.
  • This creates a vertical garden in no time at all that takes up little space but has a big impact. Your balcony will be greener and livelier - and your commitment to the environment will be visible.
  • By the way, children love to help with crafting and planting - turning the project into a little family adventure.

Our tip:
If you use seasonal herbs, you will always have fresh ingredients for the kitchen to hand - straight from your own "balcony garden".

We hope you enjoy creating it!
