Traditionally , songs or verses are recited on Christmas Eve before the presents are unwrapped. Christmas stories fit particularly well into this harmonious time. On Christmas morning, the little king was sitting at his desk working. Suddenly the little queen called out: "Look! It's snowing!" And because it was of course beautiful, the little king interrupted his work and they looked out of the window together. The flakes got bigger and bigger and soon the royal park was completely white. "Tomorrow we can go sledging," said the little king. The little queen nodded.
In the evening, the little queen cooked a big pot of porridge and when they had eaten, they put on their warm pyjamas and went to bed. The little king was just beginning to dream of snowmen bringing him letters when the queen woke him up. "I hear noises!" she whispered, "Little King! It must be a burglar!" Now the little king also heard rumbling. But because he wanted to carry on dreaming, he said: "It must be the cat Schnurzelbum." "No," said the queen. "The cat is under my comforter."
The little king had now really woken up. "Well," he said, "it's probably the poltergeists. It's too cold outside for them too." That really frightened the queen. "Please," she said, "go and see!" The little king sighed. The noises were coming from upstairs. So he climbed up to the attic. "Who's there?" he called, making his voice very low. There was a rustling sound and he looked into many pairs of shining eyes. Six dormice were crouching there, four mice and a badger. "Oh, King!" they chirped, "Please don't send us away! We had such cold feet. That's why we danced." The little king laughed. And of course they were allowed to stay. When he told his little queen who had made the noise, she was reassured. "I hope you invited them to breakfast too," she whispered. Then she fell asleep immediately.
