Mini garden in a jar

Create your own little garden for your living room.

Would you like to enjoy and maintain a garden outside of the gardening season? A small garden that looks beautiful, has space on the living room furniture and only needs to be watered infrequently? Then a small enclosed mini garden in a jar is just the thing for you. Not only does it look beautiful, but it also requires hardly any work. It only needs fresh water a few times a year as it has its own water cycle. This is not only an experience for children to observe, but also interesting for adults. And such a small garden in a jar also makes a great gift for a loved one.

Material

Large glass jar that can be sealed airtight. For example, large cucumber or hanger jars are suitable for the mini garden.

Large and small stones for the soil layer.

Plant soil.

Suitable plants such as mosses, a small fern, a small orchid, dwarf lilies, a fittonia or a small-leaved ivy.

Small stones, moss or small branches.

Procedure

Rinse the glass and stones well with hot water. This will reduce mold spores.

Place larger stones about 1-2 cm high on the bottom of the glass as drainage. This will prevent waterlogging.

Using a funnel, carefully add soil (low-nutrient sowing soil) about five cm high into the glass.

Carefully place the plants in the soil.

Decorate the soil with stones, moss or small branches.

Water your mini garden carefully with a little water. Condensation should form inside overnight and dry out again by midday.

Close the jar and place it in a bright place out of direct sunlight.

Enjoy admiring your mini garden!
