Bake your own delicious Fasnachtschüechli.

In Switzerland, there are special treats during carnival. One well-known carnival specialty is Fasnachtschüechli. These are crispy, deep-fried pieces of dough with a delicate, airy texture. The Chüechli are slightly sweet and are also dusted with powdered sugar. Here are simple instructions on how to bake your own Fasnachtsküchli.

Ingredients

  • 500 grams of flour
  • 100 grams of sugar
  • 1 sachet of vanilla sugar
  • 1 sachet of baking powder
  • 4 eggs
  • 250 ml milk
  • 80 grams butter (melted)
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • Oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Preparation

In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, vanilla sugar, baking powder and salt.

In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs with the milk and melted butter.

Add the liquid ingredients to the dry ingredients.

Mix everything well. The dough should be smooth.

Cover the dough and leave to rest for about 30 minutes.

Heat the oil in a large pan or deep fryer. The temperature should be around 170 to 180 degrees Celsius.

Divide the dough into approx. 30-50 g pieces. Roll these out into rounds.

Fry the Chüechli on both sides until golden brown.

Make sure that you do not fry too many at once.

Remove the finished Chüchli with a slotted spoon.

Drain them on kitchen paper.

Dust the Chüchli with powdered sugar before serving.

Enjoy baking and bon appétit!
