Good shoes are part of a hiker's basic equipment, because if the shoe pinches, any route is too long. We have put together a few tips and tricks on how to choose the perfect hiking boots.
A tiresome experience for every hiker: when you realize halfway through the route that your shoe is rubbing in one place with every step and you can immediately imagine how a sore spot or blister is forming. Before a planned hike, it is therefore important that you check your shoes or even buy a new pair - also for your own safety, as fatal slips happen again and again, especially on mountain hikes.
You need shoes
Your old shoes are worn out or you don't yet have any that are suitable for hiking? It's best to go directly to a specialist retailer so that you can try on several pairs of shoes and, above all, get advice. Take your time and walk back and forth with the shoe. Some stores even have extra sloping areas where you can walk up and down.
A good hiking boot should have a non-slip tread sole and provide support. To protect the ankle, they are often cut a little higher. Also ask about hiking socks: These help to prevent chafing and blisters. The strain can cause your feet to swell quite a bit when hiking. It is therefore important that they have enough room to move forward, especially in combination with thicker hiking socks. Otherwise, walking downhill can end up with blue toes. The foot should not move when walking up or downhill. You can test this by standing on the edge of the soles to tilt them.
To make sure that your old shoes still fit, you can have them checked in a specialist store - often free of charge. The sole and the rest of the material will be checked there. The shoe should be impregnated again before use. Clean it beforehand with a brush and cold water and spray the spray onto the damp upper material - this allows it to penetrate better.
