Who isn't familiar with the small, red, tasty fruits that tantalize our taste buds, especially in early summer? Strawberries (Fragaria), which belong to the rose family and consist of around 90% water and a high vitamin C content,
are popular with young and old alike thanks to their freshness and mild sweetness.
Every year, numerous delicious strawberry cake creations, ice cream variations and jams are conjured up from the mock fruit. Many people also simply eat them fresh from the strawberry field or in combination with a squeeze of lemon. There are around 20 known species with numerous subspecies and hybrid cultures, which thrive particularly well in the northern hemisphere due to the optimal climatic conditions for them.
Strawberry cake with custard - how to make it
You will need the following ingredients for a strawberry cake with custard:
For the base:
- 2 eggs
- 125 g sugar
- 1 tbsp vanilla sugar
- 125 g flour
- 125 g soft butter
- 1 tsp baking powder
- Some fat for the baking tin
Alternative for those in a hurry: buy a pre-baked sponge base, you only need to cover it with strawberries and pudding.
For the pudding:
- 500 ml milk
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 sachet of vanilla-flavored pudding powder
For the strawberry topping:
- 500 g strawberries
- 1 sachet red cake glaze
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 sachet of cream stiffener
Procedure:
First, clean, wash and halve the strawberries and sprinkle them with 2 to 3 tablespoons of sugar. In the meantime, make a sponge base if you have not already bought one. To do this, beat the eggs with the sugar and vanilla sugar until frothy. Carefully add the softened butter, baking powder and flour. It is best to add the flour little by little so that a smooth batter forms without lumps. Now grease the cake tin with butter and breadcrumbs and pour in the batter. Bake for a maximum of 15 minutes at 180 °C in the middle of the preheated oven, then leave to cool slightly. Then carefully brush with butter and spread 1 sachet of cream stiffener on top (so that the base is not soaked by the fruit and remains dry). Now cover the base with strawberries and cook the pudding according to the instructions on the packet. Pour it over the strawberries while still warm, but not hot. While it is cooling, cook the cake glaze according to the instructions on the packet and spread it over the strawberries. If you like, you can sprinkle almond sliverson top of the cake. Now leave the strawberry cake with custard to cool completely.
