Have you ever heard of the RestEssBar? If not, we would like to introduce you to this great project.
In Switzerland, around two million tons of food are thrown away every year. This corresponds to a third of all food consumed in Switzerland. The project described here aims to counteract food waste with concrete measures.
The first RestEssBar was founded at the beginning of 2014 in Winterthur's old town. Since then, many other committed people in Switzerland have decided to pursue the aforementioned goal of preventing food waste. The goal and concept is pursued at different locations and sometimes under different names, such as "VerwertBar", "Food Save" or "ChoschtBar". Despite differences, they all adhere to the same thing - the manifesto.
Manifesto
- Free for all
- Accessible for all
- Non-profit
- Non-denominational
- Independent of party politics
- Compliance with hygiene and health standards
- The name should include the location, for example "RestEssBar Winti Altstadt"
How does it work?
The principle of the RestEssBar is as follows: There is a public fridge accessible to everyone with an access code. The fridges are not only intended for people with limited financial means, but are a great relief for them. The fridge is located in a defined place. The access code is freely available to everyone. The homepage of the respective location describes how to obtain it and where you can find the fridge.
Depending on the location, the volunteers collect surplus but always perfectly good food from restaurants, stores or bakeries. Some even have their own garden, which means that the fridge is filled with fresh vegetables straight from the garden. Different rules apply depending on the location. In some cases, no leftovers from private individuals may be placed in the fridge. Where the cold chain cannot be guaranteed, for example, no dairy or meat products are offered. At these locations, the offer consists of bread, vegetables and fruit, for example.
