Wind light made from driftwood

Creating a lantern from driftwood is a creative and environmentally friendly way to use natural materials when crafting.

Materials:

• Different sizes of driftwood

• A glass or tea light holder, e.g. a preserving jar

  String or wire

• Hot glue or wood glue

  Tea light or LED candle

Instructions:

1. Collect driftwood: Look for driftwood on beaches, riverbanks or in forests. Make sure that the wood is dry and free from mold or pests.
2. Prepare the wood: Clean the driftwood thoroughly to remove sand, dirt and any bark. If necessary, sand the edges with sandpaper to smooth out any sharp spots.
3. Design: Place the glass or tealight holder in the center and arrange the driftwood around the glass. You can arrange the pieces to form a natural shape.
4. Fastening: Use hot glue or wood glue to attach the wood pieces to the glass. Make sure that the glass is secure and cannot fall over.
5. Decoration: You can decorate the lantern as you wish, e.g. with string, shells or other natural materials.
6. Insert a candle: Place a tea light or LED candle in the glass. Make sure that the candle is secure and does not come into contact with the wood if you are using a real candle.

Where can you find driftwood?

• Beaches: On coastlines where wood is washed up by water movements.
• Rivers and lakes: Shorelines of rivers and lakes are often good places to find driftwood.
• Forests: Near bodies of water or after storms, you may also come across alluvial wood in forests.

You should pay attention to this

1. Safety: Make sure that the wood has no sharp edges or splinters that could cause injury.
2. Environmental awareness: Only take wood that is not part of a protected area. Take care not to damage nature.
3. Drying: Make sure that the driftwood is well dried to avoid mold growth.
4. Fire hazard: If you use a real candle, make sure the lantern is stable and in a safe area to avoid fire hazard.
