The first signs of young plants may already be visible in February . This month is all about pruning, starting the new season and pulling plants.
Check indoor potted plants
Potted plants start to grow and sprout. But before they do, you should prune them back to give them the desired shape and new energy. Check whether your plants are still pest-free. If not, you should take appropriate measures. On warmer days, you should ventilate the potted plants extensively and flood them with daylight. This will encourage them to grow and thrive.
Protect your cherry laurel
If temperatures fall below -10 to -15 degrees for an extended period, cover your cherry laurel with a tarpaulin or jute fabric. You can recognize frost damage by brown discolored leaves. Cut off the affected branches. Just because a few are frozen does not mean that the whole plant has been affected.
Sowing flowers
You can sow summer flowers now. Sow the seeds in seed trays and place them in a bright, warm place. The trays should always be kept moist. When the first leaves appear, you can carefully separate the seedlings from each other and replant them individually.
Tip: Use empty egg cartons for the first sowing. Place either one seed in each cavity - then you won't have to separate them when planting out. If there are several seedlings, separate them after the first sprout.
Pruning fruit trees
Pruning wounds now heal quickly due to the temperature and climate. How much pruning should be done?
- Large yield last year: prune back only moderately
- Small yield last year: prune back more severely
Use a saw for larger branches and secateurs for thinner branches and twigs.
Thinning out shrubs
Cut off old and dead branches. You can also remove branches that are too thin and weak, thus leaving energy for the vigorous plant. Be sure to prune before the first flowering period. Wait for a frost-free day. Frozen wood can splinter when pruning.
Transplanting shrubs
Always transplant your shrubs on frost-free days and before they sprout for the first time. Keep the roots moist after digging. Place it on a suitable base and water the roots well. Especially before you plant it. Even after transplanting, the roots must be supplied with sufficient water, otherwise your shrub will dry out in its new location.
