Now is the right time to think about whether you want to change something in your garden. More vegetables or flowers this year? Or a lush herb corner or a rock garden? Decide on these changes now. Then you can get started right away in spring.
Leave leaves lying around
Leaves lying on flower and shrub beds and under trees should be left lying around. It protects the ground from frost. When the leaves decompose, they also provide humus for the soil and keep it moist.
Get your lawn mower in shape
If you didn't remove all the grass clippings from your lawn mower in the fall, you should do so now. It also needs an oil change for the new season. Check all lines, seals and pipes to make sure they are still intact and stable. If in doubt, call in a specialist.
Cover herbs
Cover the plants with fir branches or leaves to prevent the fine flavoring agents from freezing. Rosemary in particular should not be exposed to frost. It prefers a frost-free, airy and bright place to overwinter. This can be a spot in the garage, in the conservatory or in a sheltered place on your patio when the temperature no longer falls below zero.
Christmas trees in pots
These should be placed outside again after a week in the apartment at the latest. Until they are planted out, they like sheltered places in the garden, on the patio or balcony.
Clearing snow
Heavy, wet snow puts a strain on the roofs of greenhouses and summerhouses. Clear them of large amounts of snow. They could break under the weight.
Grow your first seedlings
You can already start sowing vegetables and growing small plants in the cellar or hobby room. Tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and celeriac are suitable for this.
General gardening if it stays cold for a long time:
- Is there still a layer of ice on your garden pond? You should definitely dig a larger hole so that the creatures in it get enough oxygen.
- Shake off snow that is lying heavily on the trees and bushes.
- Ventilate cold frames on fine days
- Winter vegetables can already be growing in cold frames. Remember to air the beds regularly and water the plants.
- Water potted plants regularly. If the containers are frozen through and through, the plants can no longer absorb enough water. If the frost persists, move them to a warmer place such as the stairwell, cellar or garage.
