The first signs of spring are already appearing in nature, plants are waking up from their winter sleep and the birds are already singing outside the windows in the morning. The days are already a little brighter, sunnier and warmer.
The gardening season is starting - it's time to get the garden ready. The first seeds can already be sown in flower and vegetable beds.
Preparing the vegetable patch
Loosen the garden soil with various rakes or dig it up. Once the soil has been loosened, you can rake in fertilizer if necessary. Look out for organic food fertilizers, such as decomposed compost, or ask in specialist shops.
If you want to use your own compost, remove the top layer first and only use the fully decomposed material. Spread it evenly over the bed. The compost brings microorganisms and earthworms with it, which loosen the soil and supply it with nutrients.
Suitable vegetables for sowing in March:
- Early bed: tomatoes, celery, peppers, kohlrabi, eggplant, lettuce, cauliflower, white cabbage, broccoli, basil
- Open field: carrots, onions, salsify, radishes, spinach, chives
Herb garden
You can also sow fine herbs now in cold frames, on the balcony or terrace. The following are suitable: thyme, marjoram, lavender, parsley and chives.
Do you have chives in your garden? Then now is the right time - if you need more - to propagate them. Dig up the chives before they form their long stems. Divide it into as many parts as you like and dig it back in at the same depth as before in different places. This will give it more room to grow and multiply.
Raised beds
Now fill the beds again with fresh compost. The compost is placed under the top, finer layer of soil. Remove the top 20 cm of soil from one half of the raised bed and pile it up on the other side. Now spread the compost over the exposed side and cover it with the removed soil. Do the same with the second side. Once your raised bed is prepared, you can start sowing radishes, spinach and carrots.
Perennials
To ensure that your perennials can store all the important nutrients, you should only cut them back in spring. Remove last year's dry shoots, some of which can simply be broken off, otherwise cut them off with suitable scissors. When pruning and tending, make sure that you spare any new shoots that are already growing.
General gardening work
- Prepare your garden, balcony or patio for the new gardening season (check garden tools and repair or replace if necessary, put seeds, fertilizer and garden tools in order).
- Plant new fruit trees and berry bushes in March
- Repot plants in pots now.
- Fertilize fruit trees.
- Cut back perennial herbs
- Cut back roses - if you have not already done so in February.
- Strawberries - remove old blossom and fruit remains and dried leaves so that the sweet berry can start the new spring stronger.
- Fertilize rhododendrons at the end of March.
We wish you a good start to the new gardening season!
