Hazelnuts contain the "good" fatty acids
The hazelnut is the oldest fruit species native to our country and is one of the few true nuts in terms of botany. Hazelnuts used to be considered a good source of energy, but today their high nutritional content is more feared. This is mainly because the nut consists of around 60 percent fat. 100 grams of hazelnuts with a total energy of 600 to 700 kilocalories therefore contain around 62 grams of fat. However, three quarters of the fatty acids are monounsaturated and a further 20 percent are polyunsaturated.
This high proportion of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids can have a positive effect on your blood lipid levels . They cause a reduction in LDL cholesterol - the "bad" cholesterol. This is the cholesterol that is transported from the liver via your blood vessels to the various tissues. So if LDL cholesterol is less present in your blood vessels, the risk of arteriosclerotic diseases is also reduced.
The high proportion of vitamin E and carotenes (natural pigments) in hazelnuts has a positive effect on cardiovascular diseases.
Food for the brain
Hazelnuts provide high amounts of B vitamins, which play a central role in your nervous system. B vitamins increase your concentration and performance. So it's not for nothing that trail mix contains nuts. Today, such foods are called brain food.
The B vitamins can also counteract depression, strengthen the nerves and prevent degenerative brain diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Nuts are therefore rightly considered nerve food. Also beneficial: 100 grams of hazelnuts contain 35 grams of biotin, which ensures stronger hair and healthy skin.
A tablespoon of hazelnuts a day brings you health benefits and won't settle on your hips.
Mysterious hazelnut customs
The hazel bush is considered a symbol of life and immortality. The Germanic ancestors dedicated it to Donar, the patron of judgment. This is why places of judgment were marked out with hazel rods. Thanks to Donar's protection, lightning was not allowed to pass through the hazel. Anyone who had a hazel bush next to their house felt protected from lightning, as the blessing of the bush not only applied to the tree, but also to the nearby dwelling. Hazels are popular divining rods and should be cut on Christmas night. According to old folklore, touching the rods brings fertility.
Why not prepare a hazelnut parfait?
Ingredients for 8 portions: 3 eggs, 100 g sugar, 500 g cream, 1 sheet of gelatine, 100 g hazelnuts, a little Nutella.
Preparation: Finely chop the hazelnuts, caramelize the sugar and add the nuts. Whip the cream until stiff. Beat the eggs in a bain-marie (hot) until they thicken. Add the gelatine previously soaked in cold water and beat in a bain-marie (cold). Now fold in the hazelnut mixture with a little Nutella (to taste) and the whipped cream. Pour into a (bread) mold (line with cling film beforehand!) and freeze.
