When your children are fledged, an exciting but also challenging phase begins for the whole family. You continue to lovingly accompany your children as they gradually discover their own paths and take on responsibility.
The transition to adolescence or young adulthood brings with it many changes. Children develop their own opinions, interests and circles of friends. This independence is an important step, but it can also make you feel insecure. You may feel pride, but also worry or melancholy. It is normal that letting go takes time and requires a delicate balance.
It is important that you remain a reliable caregiver. Open conversations create trust and show your children that you support them without taking everything off their hands. Show an interest in their activities, listen to them and give them space to make their own decisions. Your appreciation for small successes promotes self-confidence and a sense of responsibility.
Rituals and shared times strengthen family cohesion. A weekly snack, a walk together or a games evening provide an opportunity to stay in touch. Even small gestures, such as a short message in the afternoon or a loving note, show presence and solidarity without restricting freedom.
Give the children the opportunity to gain their own experience, even if this includes making mistakes. Mistakes teach them independence and problem-solving skills. At the same time, it is helpful to set clear boundaries and rules that provide orientation and convey a sense of security. This creates a balance between freedom and responsibility.
Creative projects or joint activities that encourage conversation and create closeness are supportive. Baking a cake together, starting a gardening project or creating a photo album provides an opportunity for sharing and making memories together. Such moments strengthen the emotional connection, even if everyday life becomes increasingly self-determined.
During this phase, you learn to develop trust in your children's abilities and to accept your own feelings. Fledging is a natural process that means growth for both sides. With patience, openness and loving support, you will experience that closeness and independence are by no means mutually exclusive, but complement each other wonderfully.
Have fun accompanying and letting go!
