Practical and charming: build your own shelves from wine crates

With a little creativity and craftsmanship, you can turn simple boxes into a unique piece of furniture that bears your signature - and may even be the topic of conversation on your next visit.

Do you have a few old wine crates to hand and fancy a little DIY project with character? Then a home-made shelf made from wine crates is just the thing for you. Wine crates are not only practical, but also bring a certain warmth and nostalgia into the home. With little effort, you can create a stylish piece of furniture that can be used in a variety of ways - whether in the children's room, in the hallway, in the living room or even on the balcony.

Materials:

  • 3-6 empty wine crates (depending on the desired size)
  • Sandpaper or an electric sander
  • Brush and wood paint or oil (optional)
  • Screws or mounting adhesive (depending on the type of mounting)
  • Cordless screwdriver or drill
  • Spirit level and tape measure
  • Felt glides (for sensitive floors)

Procedure:

  1. Prepare the crates: First clean the wine crates thoroughly and allow them to dry thoroughly. Then sand the surfaces smooth - particularly important if the shelving will be used by children later. Look out for protruding splinters and rough edges.
  2. Consider the design: Think about how you want the shelf to look: Do you want to arrange the boxes next to each other, stacked or staggered? For more stability, it is advisable to place the bottom boxes crosswise and the top ones upright. Try out different variations before you start fixing.
  3. Treat the surface (optional): If you like, you can now treat the crates with wood paint or stain. A white or pastel-colored paint gives the shelf a fresh, modern look. Of course, you can also leave the wood natural and simply oil it - this brings out the grain beautifully.
  4. Assemble: Fix the boxes together - either with screws or a strong assembly adhesive. If the shelf is higher, it is also advisable to fix it to the wall to avoid the risk of it tipping over. To do this, simply drill through the back and screw in with suitable wall plugs.
  5. Attach feet or glides: To avoid scratching the floor, stick felt glides to the underside - this is particularly recommended for parquet or laminate flooring.

Possible uses:

  • In the children's room: For books, toys or cuddly toys - robust and clearly arranged.
  • In the entrance area: As a shoe rack or for hats, gloves and umbrellas.
  • Inthe kitchen: For supplies, cookbooks or pretty glasses.
  • On the balcony: As a small plant shelf - but please paint it weatherproof!

Have fun creating and designing!
