Edamame are unripe soybeans. The green pods conceal crunchy, elongated bean seeds, which contain a lot of protein. Steamed and with a little salt, they taste good both hot and cold.
Edamame in the pod or already released has been available to buy in supermarkets for several years. The products come either from Switzerland or neighboring countries. Edamame are sold frozen. However, they are quickly cooked.
See for yourself and try this delicious and protein-rich snack.
What you need for an aperitif for four people:
300 grams of frozen edamame in the shell, salt, steaming sieve
To steam the edamame:
Place the steaming sieve in a chrome steel pan and fill with water up to the sieve insert. Place the frozen soybeans on the steamer insert. Now place a suitable lid on the pan, set the hob to the highest setting and wait until you hear the water boiling inside. Turn the heat down to a low setting and allow the edamame to steam for eight to ten minutes until al dente. Lift the edamame or the whole steaming sieve out of the pan and place the cooked edamame in a bowl. Sprinkle with a little salt, mix the pods and serve.
How to enjoy edamame properly:
Only the seeds, which are hidden inside the pod, are eaten. The outer shell is too fibrous and cannot be eaten even after a long cooking time. To get to the seeds, put part of the pod in your mouth and use your lips to press the soybeans into your mouth one by one. The salt, which clings to the pod, will also find its way into your mouth. You can compost the empty pod as normal.
The remaining filled pods can be reused in many ways. Either eat the seeds out of the cold pods the next day or heat them in the microwave for a short time and then eat them. Of course, you can also open the pods, scoop out the seeds with your fingers and use them in a salad or as a vegetable garnish the next day.
There are no limits to your creativity here.
Enjoy this high-quality source of vegetable protein.
