E-numbers and allergies - what's true about them

Itchy skin and burning eyes due to food additives?

Here you can read what E-numbers are. E-numbers tend to have a bad reputation and are considered potentially harmful to health . What is meant by possible health problems is allergies. But is it true that E-numbers, i.e. additives, can trigger allergies?

Since allergies are caused by proteins (e.g. milk protein, protein from peanuts or soy), E-numbers cannot trigger allergies, but only intolerances. The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) refers to this as "pseudoallergies". These are "exaggerated reactions" of individual body cells, but not of the immune system. For this reason, these intolerances cannot be detected by an allergy test. But it is still unpleasant for those affected! If you suffer from an intolerance, always read the list of ingredients and avoid the affected additives. Substances that can lead to intolerances must be declared in Switzerland.

Before an additive is approved, it must be tested for a possible allergenic effect . The following rules then apply:

  • Substances that trigger frequent and/or severe reactions are not authorized and therefore may not be added to foods
  • Substances that trigger an intolerance in a small proportion of the population must be clearly declared on the label.

Intolerances are known to occur with phenylalanine, which is found in the sweetener aspartame (E951 and E962) and with sulphites (E220-E224 and E226-E228). All these substances are listed on the corresponding food packaging . If you suffer from additive intolerances or are otherwise interested and have a smartphone , you can download the K-Tipp app for 4.40 francs. It serves as an "E-number translator" when shopping and provides information as to whether these can be harmful to your health.
