Little power packs: Gingerbread energy balls for the winter

These delicious energy balls taste like gingerbread, are quick to make and provide healthy energy for cold days.


In the cold season, the need for something warming and invigorating grows. These gingerbread balls combine winter spices with healthy ingredients such as rolled oats, nuts and dried fruit. They contain no refined sugar and do not require an oven. Whether for a mid-morning snack, afternoon snack or as a snack on the go - these balls are perfect for the winter season. And are ideal for a cozy family afternoon or as a supply for the snack box. Children also enjoy rolling, shaping and tasting them.

Recipe for around 15 to 20 energy balls

Ingredients:
- 100 g rolled oats (soft or coarse)
- 80 g ground almonds or hazelnuts
- 80 g pitted dates
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder (unsweetened)
- 1 teaspoon gingerbread spice
- 1 pinch cinnamon
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 to 2 tablespoons maple syrup or birnel
- 2 to 3 tablespoons water
- Optional: Grated coconut or ground nuts for topping

How to do it:

1. prepare the ingredients
Cut the dates into small pieces. Place all the ingredients in a large bowl or directly into a food processor.

2. mix or knead the mixture
Process everything into a compact mass. If the mixture is too dry, add a spoonful of water until it becomes malleable. If you don't have a food processor, you can also knead the mixture by hand - it takes a little patience, but it's worth it.

3. forming balls
Take small portions of the mixture and roll them into balls between your hands - about the size of a plum stone. Roll the finished balls in grated coconut or ground nuts as desired.

4. chill and store
Place the balls in a storage tin and chill for at least an hour. They will stay fresh in the fridge for about a week. Freezing is also possible.

Tip: Packaged in a preserving jar or in a pretty paper bag with a label, the energy balls make a lovely gift from the kitchen - perfect for grandparents, godparents or neighbors.
