Children love discovering the world of animals - and tracks can become tangible with salt dough. Making animal footprints together encourages creativity, motor skills and powers of observation. The result is small works of art that create memories and stimulate the imagination.
Salt dough animal prints are a simple, creative project to do at home. The activity combines nature observation with crafting and can be adapted to the age of your child. At the same time, children experience the diversity of the animal world in a playful way.
Making salt dough
You only need three ingredients for the dough: 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of salt and about ¾ cup of water. Knead everything into a smooth dough. Your child can help with weighing and kneading - it's fun and develops fine motor skills.
Select animal tracks
Think together about which animals are interesting. A walk in the park or garden offers lots of ideas: Dogs, cats, birds or squirrels leave tracks in the ground that you can use as a template. Alternatively, you can also invent fantasy animals.
Create imprints
Roll out the salt dough to a thickness of about half a centimeter. Then you can use toy animals, stamps you have carved yourself or even real leaves to press impressions into the dough. For example, a small soft toy with paws can be used to make cute dog tracks. Children can try out how much pressure is needed to create a clear pattern.
Bake and design
The finished prints are baked in the oven at 100-120 °C for 1-2 hours until the dough hardens. The traces can then be painted, labeled or decorated with glitter. Children love experimenting with colors and giving the animals names or stories.
Games and learning moments
The finished prints are also suitable for small learning games: Who can recognize the paws of a dog, cat or bird? Or you can lay out the tracks on a table and let your child match the animals to them. This way you can combine creativity with knowledge about animals and nature.
Have fun creating!
